Elf

Next in my 31 Days of Christmas is a more recent Christmas Movie:

Elf is the story of a human baby, Buddy, raised by elves in the North Pole who never really quite fit in. One day he overhears two elves talking and finds out he is adopted. One of my favorite lines is from Leon the Snowman who looks suspiciously Sam the Snowman from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, "At least you have a daddy. I was just rolled up one day and left out in the cold!"


His adopted father gives him a photo of his real father and a snow globe of the Empire State Building where he works.

Buddy sets off for New York City traveling through "the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and through the Lincoln Tunnel" to find his real father, who just happens to be on Santa's naughty list.

After that it becomes the typical Christmas spirit/transformation/reunited family holiday movie that ends with the world believing in Santa Claus again. But woven throughout are some hilarious scenes that only Will Ferrel (or Robin Williams 20 years ago) could pull off. One of the funniest is when he mistakes a egotistical children's writer, who happens to be a dwarf, for one of Santa's elves. "He's an angry elf."
The dwarf jumps up on the table, runs and attacks Buddy.

Although a fun movie, with a few funny moments, it isn't one I would watch over and over.

I think I'd go four and a half. I liked this movie very much; but then, I like stupid comedy. Big fan of the 3 Stooges.
I'm also a big "Godfather" guy, and every time I see James Caan, I can't help but think "So that's what Sonny would have looked like if Barzini hadn't had him rubbed out."

I guess I'd agree that this movie isn't what I'd classify as a Christmas classic, at least not up there with "Christmas Vacation" (I await your review), but we both laughed out loud. I hope also to read your views on "Christmas with the Kranks".

Both of those movies are on my list, and are scheduled for next week.

"Stupid" comedy is rather fun! I especially love when Buddy tries to put the star on top of the tree.

I can't believe I forgot to mention "A Christmas Story"! Ralphie and the BB gun! My favorite Christmas movie! The first time I saw it, I was in High School; it came on Showtime and I laughed so hard I cried. I must have watched it 15 times that month.

Which version of "A Christmas Carol" will you be reviewing? My personal favorite is the one with George C. Scott as Scrooge and David Warner as Bob Crachit. As a side note, Ian MacKellen (Magneto from the X-Men, Gandalf from LOTR), has a small role as one of the guys who comes to Scrooge for a donation.
It was a TV-movie back in the 80s. Very good production values. As a Star Trek fan, I've always wanted to see the one with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge. Alas, not yet.

By the way....I like this series. Very cool. Welcome to JU.

Yeah, that one is on my list too of course! It's coming up on the 24th.
The Christmas Carol is the 1951 version with Alastir Sim. I actually watched it yesterday..just need to get the review written. A Muppet Christmas Carol is coming up too!
