Even after the heartbreaks of Voyager, Enterprise, Nemesis, and Insurrection, I still think a next generation-era Star Trek total conversion for GalCiv2 would be absolutely awesome. Unfortunately, with no modeling or art skills and only marginal programming skills I don't think I could personally do much more than edit some of the XMLs to be trekky. I know this type of mod is possible, though!
After going through the modding guide, I'm honestly impressed by how transparant Stardock's made modding this game.
I'm just throwing this out there, and i'd gladly help but I can't lead and I can't model or draw or anything actually useful. Still, what would make a good Star Trek TC:
Revamped tech tree: The production mods to different types of replicators. The engine mods to ranges from Impulse to Warp 9.9*. And of course the weapons- kill the mass drivers and stick to torpedoes and phasers/disruptors of different levels.
Completely overhauled races: Humans/Federation, obviously, plus the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Borg, and maybe even the Dominion. Changing their descriptions and art wouldn't be too hard, but the modeling for each ship style would be the main time-consuming bit. Minor races could include Ferengi, Bajorans, the Maquis, all that fun.
Interface: Don't have to change the menu system that much, but replacing the menus with a Star Trek LCARS-themed skin would do a lot towards making it feel real.
New hulls and components: THIS would be the bulk of a Star Trek TC project. Just modeling the different ships would be hard enough, but imagine how awesome different components would be. Take a basic Galaxy-class (TNG Enterprise) ship and put on 2, or 3, or even 6 warp nacelles! Or two saucer sections! Make a Klingon warbird with five wings and a tail! This would be the hardest part and it's completely and utterly over my head, but... imagine the possibilities.
Okay, maybe this is just the pining of a nerd. Still... what do y'all think about such an idea, even as potential?
