Beta 5 - nVidia crash troubleshooting thread

For those of you with nVidia cards who are finding that the game crashes almost immediately try this build:

https://www.galciv2.com/beta/builds/gc-nvidia.zip

Unzip the two files into your GalCiv II directory and let us know if this addresses the issue.

Fixed. Good job. I hate playing on my laptop (except when I'm on meetings). Now let's see if the flagship gets upgraded .

Great.  However, we need you to do one more thing...

Delete (or move elsewhere) your c:\my documents\my games\galciv2 directory

The "fix" we put in there may only work for those who have previously had it working.

Frogboy,

I'm not quite sure what you want us to do. Or better to say why you want us to do this?

The bug was that for whatever reason, on nVidida cards, the DirectX call to query what resolutions your card suports returns NULL.

So the fix is to have it clear out the resolutions if it returns NULL.

What I want to double check on is whether the game is working for you guys now simply because it's already got a list of working resolutions from the previous time you had the game running.

OK. I opened new subdirectory in c:\....\my documents\my games and moved there entire galciv2 directory so that the path was:

c:\....\my documents\my games\test\galciv2

and I started the game. It worked but when i checked the my games subdirectory I found galciv2 both there and one level down, in test subdirectory. I mean I have now:

c:\....\my documents\my games\galciv2
and
c:\....\my documents\my games\test\galciv2

Is that what you want ed us to do?

Yep.  Just wanted to see if it still worked.

It did. Just checking, did you see one of my previous posts where I said that it worked without fix on my laptop with NVIDIA Quadro FX Go 1400?

It works for me without the fix... Version 0.80[b].008 just downloaded via SDC. Geforce 6800GT, 81.95 drivers. I can start a new game without problems, even after moving the old folder out of the way.

Must be a particular set of nVidia cards then. Either way, should be set now.

Brad,

I encountered the problem with a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra and the patched files fixed the issue for me.

Just to add information. I have an nVidia card, but Beta 5 worked fine without needing the patch. Here is the video section from a debug file

Display Info
Display device 1:
Device Name: \\.\DISPLAY1
Card Name: NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce 6800
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Key Device: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_00C1&SUBSYS_024510DE&REV_A2
Display Memory: 256.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Dell 1905FP (Analog)
Monitor Max Resolution: 1280,1024
Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.7124
Driver Date: 12/15/2004 11:01:00

Don't know if it helps or if this information is needed, but it does appear to affect some cards and not others. Thanks for all the hard work.

I have noticed since patch it is unstable.. within 30 to 50 turns I will always CTD. Thank god for autosave, eh?
I'll start sending in those smart exceptions.
The best way to get into the gamma, btw, is to be posting smart exceptions and other things so that we can solve problems people run into.

BrAD should all NVidea users patch up with this or just if the game doesnt start up at all. I notice thewre was a mini-patch yesterday - anthing relevent on that?
If it works for you, you can wait for today's update before doing anything. The issue was only happening for people who run GC2 in software mode.

Question is, do the patches work for this latest update on 01/09. Here goes!
