I just watched episode 4. They are getting better, but still some juvenile humor. Less preachy than episode 3 and I was afraid it was headed the same way.

I wouldn't mind some sexual harassment training.... I just get the feeling I'm not doing it right.

I think the mix of humor and drama are going to turn a lot of people off. I watched the 1st episode thinking it was supposed to be a comedy, and it was...sort of. The 2nd episode had less humor and more drama, and now the third seems to be 1/2 & 1/2.

I think Seth will loose a lot of steam over the season and as of this point, I don't see it generating enough positive feedback to grant them a 2nd season.

I'll keep watching to see if they'll prove me wrong, but sadly I don't think so.

It's not a show I'm really a fan of, but I will watch it if there's nothing else going on. It doesn't a lot in the way of comedy or entertainment for me...

Yeah, I feel the same way. I watched a bit of the first episode and was left feeling nonplussed so turned it off. I saw a bit of the second episode and gave up part way in, so no, I doubt it'll see a second season. For mine it is neither good at comedy or sci.fi... so it's OFF my to-do list.

The Orville is basically a passion project for Seth. He was tired that the Trek he knew was dead and there is no sign of it coming back. So he basically made a TNG/Voyager like show of his own. The name changes and forced attempts at humour make it different enough not to get sued. Honestly going by the first two episodes it has some real potential for being a spiritual successor to Star Trek, but they might want to dial back the Seth jokes. Otherwise, it really is just TNG in all but name and Shakespearian actors.

As for Discovery, there are so many things wrong with that show from the corporate politics, actors badmouthing fans and yet another retconning of Klingons that I just don't know who it is for. There are even rumours that Netflix is not happy with the show and that it's pretty much guaranteed to get canned after the first season. Thus that other Meyer-produced Star Trek show starting pre-production.

We are a long way from the glory days of Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5. But between them, I do think that The Expanse and The Orville help to scratch that itch many of us have.

Main thing I didn't like about Star Trek Discovery, is once more we're not moving forward but, still stuck w/ prequels and the alike. Like you said Klingon's revamped again, and why? Even with that set aside, I did enjoy the first episode but, if it was on TV I'd most likely find myself not watching it, like I did with Star Trek Enterprise after the first season. I just don't like prequel TV shows or Movies (Normally, The Star Trek and Star Wars Movies are a few of the only prequels I enjoy). The Orville itches the "Star Trek" itch. I'm finding that entertaining as it's just different enough from TNG, DS9 &, Voyager. Although I admit the main reasons I'm watching one over the other, is I'm not paying extra for CBS All-access/Netflix. Looking forward to the next episode of the Orville tonight.

Well, I finally saw last week's episode, #5. I liked it. The Mr. Potatohead gag was hilarious (as was, in a twisted way, the counter-gag). But best of all, a new twist on a time paradox story. One story hole: during the cat fight Ilara just stood there and watched.

My major problem is that it's on opposite one of my favorite PBS shows...

ST:D is still good, IMO, but this week was like a cheesy "Groundhog Day meets Star Trek". The Orville could have had a heyday with that concept.

I thought that one was a train wreck. The absolute lack professionalism shown getting them into the issue they were working on was horrendous. The idea itself was a good one to explore, it's too bad they couldn't think of some crime against that society more in line with a decent acting crewperson. There were certainly some good parts as well, but that scenario landing them in the mess really pained me.

While some seem to like The Orville and STD, the general feeling isn't encouraging whatsoever and I think I'll just stick to the old tried and true's..... Blindspot; Quantico; The 100; Stranger Things, etc. At least with those I know what I'm getting and the piss weak attempts at comedy aren't there to detract from the intended theme of the show.

Thing is, I'm not getting much time to sit and watch TV anyhow, what with moving and unpacking, etc, so I will have to be selective as to what to watch until things are more settled here in the new place. A few of my favourite shows have started back up in recent weeks, and some are about to begin, so I'll bookmark those in and see what happens with regard to any spare time I may have.

I am perfectly fine with nonsense on the ship or while not out "on mission." For instance, loved the practical joke story line when the leg was removed.

But on a planet, where the Orville's version of Starfleet's Prime Directive is in effect, it seems stupid and bad writing to not only have a member go out of character and start dirty dancing with a statue but to also completely start ignoring direct orders to stop. Honestly I was hoping that character was going to get their brain fried and written of the show at that point. (Obviously no fault of the actor, that was all showrunner/writers/director)

I'd also love to see some throwback to anything other than late 20th or early 21st century earth. Whether going further back, or just making up stuff from the near future would really improve the show.

Overall, I like the show, there are just some parts that are super cringy.

I did find it cheesy, but not out of the ordinary, that the world just happened to be like 21st century Earth, with exactly the same fashion, the same cars, driving on the same asphalt roads, and they all just happen to have standard-issue cell phones that capture video. The only difference is that they wear their Facebook likes on their chests. Wow, what are the odds? They have 21st-century technology, yet are completely oblivious to the extraterrestrial life orbiting right around their planet. They have this witch-hunting culture, yet they managed to innovate these video cell phones. Oh, and on the previous episode, all the plant life just happens to be exactly like California! How about that?

Yes yes, we know: Seth's special-effects budget might be a bit limited. It's no different from all the Holodeck cheese on ST:TNG, really. Just have to swallow the disbelief and move on.

And move on I will.... without even having stopped by to take a gander [look]. The more I read about this Orville 'debacle', the more I am reminded of the sick Family Guy and how fechen ridiculous it it. The only difference, from what I'm reading, is that The Orville uses humans instead of cartoon characters, but that would hardly make this wannabe show any more tolerable than its cartoon predecessor.

Oh, and before anyone asks: "But have you watched it?", I don't have to. The general consensus is that the show is crap, and the previews I did happen to catch, do indeed confirm that sentiment. So no, I haven't and won't. I'd rather watch grass grow [cos watching paint dry isn't as in harmony with nature] or endure B&W reruns of The Three Stooges.

Now that's a very interesting idea! STOS City on the Edge of Forever played with it a bit, but not enough. Maybe the effort required to establish the unfamiliar milieu just doesn't work in a 42 minute format...

What deprivation? For a start, I'm not watching much TV these days due to having just moved, unpacking and settling in. The other thing, I can only be deprived if I wanted or needed something in the first place. I neither wanted or needed The Orville, So feel completely vindicated in having not having seen it and most likely never will.

The one thing I am deprived of is.....

Okay, maybe for another time.... but did I ever tell you how much I hate bankers?
