My Homeworld Mod

This is my first attempt at a conversion and I am still learning. I have the Kushan(TEC) and Taiidan(Vasari) playable. I have played the Kushan on a huge FFA map to the end. I didn't add the motherships because I can't decide what role they would play other than a huge carrier. I made the Homeworld corvettes as frigates, HW frigates as cruisers, and well, Cap ships are Cap ships. I made the cloak generator as a planetmodule. which will cloak your modules and ships in an area of effect, but not planets. The gravwell generator is mobile, blocking phase jumping in an area for a little longer time than the phase block module. to keep the enemy from fleeing. Added a few derlicts to fill out the ship slots and made a missile corvette for the Taiidan. I will add the Kadesh next in the Advent slot and eventually the Turanic Raiders as pirates (and make them playjable). Thanks to Sierra, Relic and anyone associated with this great game, Homeworld.

As with any mod dont expect it to be flawless. I dont mind seeing the salvagers as builders since in the beginning of HW1 you see salvagers circling, and docking the scaffold. When it is attacked by the Taidan you see salvagers trying to defend the scaffold. As far as minelayers being planet bombers, again i dont mind. Did anyone honestly use the minelayers in HW, or HW2? I sure didnt. I thought they were useless. I am glad to see the model being put to good use along with the derilicts. Dont read too much into the lore. Sure some things are set in stone like the Ion Cannon frigs, but wraith is just trying to fill the sins ship roles, and using as many different units that fit as close as possible to the ship slots. I would do the same thing.

EvilTesla-RG has some good point which I did struggle with when assigning ships and their roles. But when it all comes down to it HW and Sins are completly differnt games premise wise. So here are my thoughts on why I put those ships in question in their roles. But I really don't want to get in to a dicussion about what went on after the end of HW and the begining of HW:C. That is for a different topic.
Salvage Corvettes: First is there is nothing to salvage in Sins. So I think it is not a far stretch for the salvage corvette to build because after all Kushan needed more than just the mothership to build ships to take on the rest of the Taiidan Empire.
Minelayer: Useless in HW. Again not much of a stretch to convert to a planet bomber to take the load off cap ships, which I had reservations about since the Kushan had their planet destroyed that way. I did try to figure out a way to lay mines, but I didn't use them in HW and couldn't see my self using them in Sins.
Derlict Cruiser: Gee if I needed more cap ships and I saw one just floating around Hmmm I think I would have to have it.  Besides who's to say the Taiidan didn't have these older ships in other places as pickett ships in lesser systems they ruled. We saw a very limited view of the Taiidan Empire as witnessed by the different ships in the cutscenes that where not playable. Somebody had to make these ships.
This mod may not be canon HW, but these are two very different games and with a little imagination it works.
Lastly anybody, please feel free to tweak this mod to your satisfaction. Shoot, I don't care if you upload a different version using these conversions. These are not my models, I just wanted to play with HW ships because HW is my favorite out of the 3. Hey, I may want to download your take on the game.

Yes I did use mine layers quite well. I Tri-walled. But instead of multigun Corvs, I used minelayers. Worked insanly well.

I can't wait to see the final product of this mod (but my all means, don't rush it)

Seriously, I went for the multiguns. I used minelayers sometimes, but they werent effective enough IMO. Especially as an offensive weapon.

isn't it possible to change the effects of phase jumping?

So couldn't you replace teh wierd circle charge up thing with a HW-like jump effect?

I recently played the original HomeWorld and Homeworld 2, and there was a lot of good memories in replaying them, even though the graphics are of course dated. The graphics of Sins in contrast is much more modern and detailed, however the game play is completely different. I played the mod that you made wraith and my hat is off to your wonderful effort, the models do in fact look just like they are out of HomeWorld. Only three quick points though, would be the new textures to update the graphics would go a long way in bringing the models into the detail level of other Sins graphics. Second, as a big fan of HW I think we need to find a way to import the Pride of Hiigara. If this is HomeWorld, music would be wonderful, but the Pride of Hiigara is in many ways, the heart of HomeWorld and needs to be in the mod.

Thirdly, even playing with the HW models, it still feels like Sins. I mean it is Sins, and it is nice to have the HW graphics, which I appreciate all your time going through so we could play it. But Star Trek games play different, the way they are laid out and played, the music, the graphics, but perhaps as important is the play style. HomeWorld is the same, and has a more strategic play style than Sins as it is currently laid out. The just in time research tree is implemented differently than Sins, and even though i enjoy Sins, it plays fundamentally different than HomeWorld. If Sierra updated HomeWorld, then I would play it and enjoy it. And play Sins and enjoy it in a different way from HomeWorld. And I guess not expect Sins to be everything I want a new modern HomeWorld to be, instead of Sins just being Sins. But I dont have a modern HomeWorld, just the old copies from before, and though much enjoyed and loved, they are still past their prime graphically, though i would claim that internally, it still functions as well as any modern interface for a game. Anyway, thank you very much for the effort and the memories and for all the hard work. It is very cool and I love having it and only hope it gets better and some of the same feel can be captured. But that may come from the developers allowing different modes or play styles to be implemented. Anyway, thank you and take care from a fellow HomeWorld fan. :)

Yeah.  I suggested adding in the Pride of Hiigara as the Kushan colony capital.  That's what it was designed for after all.  And the Kushan really need updated textures.  Especially as their powder blue paint scheme is as much HW as the Pride of Hiigara.

It is not so much that the models, and textures need an update. The mod needs totally new models, and textures. Ones created to the current standards of Sins. Reqiuiem War for HW2 did just that. Pity they never released that mod.

Making the said models, and textures will be a daunting task to say the least. Right now the current models, and textures are just fine as placeholders until all of the game mechanics work. Then the focus of the mod can shift to the artwork.

guy's, what about you uniting in 7 deadly sins? just have kushan and others as 2 new races..

and also, it would be easier to use hw2 models, they wouldn't need to be re-textured, or re-maide. would be simplier i think.

This was a HW1 mod I think.  Although I actually prefer the HW2 ships to the HW1 ones.  Hiigaran BC FTW!

Thanks everyone for all the comments. I am redoing the ship models. As of right now I have the Kushan done and half way through the Taiidan. The models look alot better but the textures are still the original HW textures. I want to thank Major Stress for the information and the help to improve the models. I have also included the motherships as one of the ships you start with. I didn't though make them buildable. They carry 8 squads of strike craft. I wanted to let them build other ships, but couldn't figure out how to do that. I don't think Sins code will allow that but I may be mistaken. I also don't know how they will effect balance yet. Yes...What I would like to see done, is the mod done in coding, weapon effects, and tech tree, hardpoints, voices, and sound effects slash music

THEN we can work on models. Just a thought, I'm playing the mod as we speak. :D

Well as far as the models go there is a group over at relic forums who are doing some Kushan styled models for HW2. The concept they have is kind of an evolution of the old HW stuff to how it would look in HW2. because the stock HW2 ships didn't really share any of the same design phillosphy.

 

I don't really wanna link to the forum thread itself because I'm not sure if it is ok with the rules or not. But if anyone wants to PM me I can point you in the right direction and maybe you can get in touch with them.

I have uploaded Beta 1.1 of this mod.

I redid the textures with the help from information provided by Major Stress. I think they look alot better.

Added the Motherships as a starting ship, but not buildable. Each carry 8 squads of strikecraft. May need better balancing.

Added unique shield meshes for each model.

Added new minning bases for Taiidan.

Tried to tweak entity files to make ship weapons fire more like HW ships. Need suggestions in this department. (Rotating turrets would be nice, but Sins doesn't support that).

Will there be a HW2 mod sometime in the future Wraith?  Like Stress said, the models are textures are already at Sins's level.

 

Damn it, its times like these I wish weapon types weren't hardcoded.  Yes, Kushan ion beams are beams, but calling them beams doesn't seem right.

 

And yeah, I actually prefer the Hiigaran blue ions to the Kushan red ions.  Looks more ion-y.

 

So please, please, please make a HW2 mod Wraith.  I so need to be able to use fleets of Hiigaran BC's or Carriers and wipe his puny frigate army off the map.

 

And Wraith, still no Homeworld music?  Really, the music is a lot of what makes Homeworld.  Helps with the atmosphere, you know.

So far I think this beta is going very well. At points, it is so convincing that I will sometimes try to use Homeworld commands.

 

Besides what I said before, I have a rather long list of things I think need to be fixed.

Personally, I believe that if a mod is too be done, it is too be done right, or not at all. (And I have made a semi-large mod before, so I know how hard it can get)

 

As of yet, I have only played Kushan, so everything here is for the Kushan unless stated otherwise.

 

 

I like the Mothership, but it has some problems.

 

First, the String seems to be missing.

 

The Jump Charge up realy does not fit the Mothership.

 

Because the Mothership can build Eight fighters, I think the build speed needs to be increased.

 

The mothership needs to Level up so it can stay on Par with the other capitols.

 

 

I was thinking that the Mothership needs a colonizing ability, and it seems that all the capitol ships need an ability work-over. (Isn’t it strange that the Missile Destroyer can colonize?)

 

Other than the mothership:

 

The colonizing frigate mesh needs to be changed. Research Ships on general do not colonize planets.

 

In general, the textures still need work.

 

The Imperator seems to be too weak for a capitol ship. And WHY are their HW2 style guns on it??

 

I was wondering about the Specters if there is anything deferent about them compared to normal interceptors? Are you going to give them a cloaking ability?

 

The pictures for the units seem a little messed up.

 

And the descriptions for the ships should be a little more accurate.

 

Also, the research names and descriptions should be changed accordingly.

 

I like the different types of fighters you are trying to bring in. However, I have already spoken of the specter. The other three, Sheild MK 1, Shield MK 2, and the Drones, I have trouble with.  Like I said before, I believe in doing it right, or not at all. The Drone Frigate really doesn’t work. Unless you can get the drones to work, I’d scrap the Drone Frigate, and give the Support Frigate the ability to field fighters (yes AND repair!!)

 

About the Shields. I like that idea, but only if they are DIFFERENT than interceptors. As in the Shield MK 2 is like HW in that it is stronger, but very slow. I don’t understand the purpose for the MK 1. It was scraped in HW for a reason….no reason to build it. The MK 1 should be replaced with a bomber.

 

I have not played the Taiidan, but I have seen a little of them.

 

I’m sorry about the Taiidan extractors. Your attempt was valiant, however, I have a SERIES problem with using segments of a Hyperspace inhibitor for a resource collector. However, I admit, that actually looks pretty good. SO maybe if there was a little editing done, make it more collector-ish, then I think I’d be good with it.

 

I like the autocannons as well, what a good idea!! However, the Kushan never used Auto Cannons. They need to have something different.

 

 

Also, I love the Firelance, and the Vengence. Out of your mod, they are now my favorite ships. The effects are AWSOME!!

 

However, I have two minor problems with the Firelance. First, it should have significantly more firepower than the Vengance. Secondly, it shouldn’t have Embolden, but I can see some reasons for having Embolden. (Personaly, I’d put Embolden on the Trapper)

 

I was also wondering if the building meshes will be changed, or if you will use sins buildings?

Or will the research be changed to be more Homeworldish?

 

I understand using shields, but Homeworld doesn’t have shields, are you going to take the shields off?

 

I was also wondering if you were going to replace jumping effects with Homeworld type Jumping effects?

 

 

 

 

Besides my hundreds of concerns, this is a good mod so far. I like it; I like what you’re trying to do.

It is so convincing at some points in time that I try using Homeworld short cut keys, and get confused when they don’t work.

 

I know I kind of sound like a prick with all my nit picking. But I only do that because I am scared, Scared that you will screw up and Marjorly and insult Homeworld.

 

I have done some Major Modding before, so I know how hard it is. Especially with doing it by yourself, and with my un-reasonable demands of “Do it right, or not at all.”

 

I would offer my help, but I am still adjusting to college life, and I don’t want to do any modding before 1.1 is out. Once 1.1 is out I am going to improve my Tri-Pirate mod. Then, if you’re still working on this mod, I may offer my help. (If you’re not, I may gather a team your welcome to join, and attempt to turn this mod into something that challenges the Seven Sins Mod)

Hmm.. if you have experience working on mods, and are passionate about so many changes, why not go ahead and implement the changes you suggest?  I'm sure wraith would love some help doing the actual work on this thing.

This has officially become my MOST FAVORITE!!   :)  THIS IS BEAUTIFUL, a new HW in the Modern age with COOL graphics and the old ships.  :)  GO for your own vision, and just keep up the WONDERFUL WORK!!   :)

Wraith, consider this an official merge request from the 7 Deadly Sins mod team.

 

Basically, can we merge your mod into 7DS?  There are a lot of HW fans on the team and we would greatly appreciate being able to send the Kushan up against the various other races of the 7DS universe.
