Updating pre-made ships without starting from scratch?

I am wondering if there is a way to update a ship design without it going to the base hull when the ship is something that was already built into the game.

I would have used a forum search but there appears to be no such feature... (that or I am blind)

For example I wanted to upgrade a starfury (design came with the game) and when I did that it gave me the base hull without any of the doodads that give the ship it's look.

Update works fine for ships I have already made but some designs are just fine to me (new at making ships) and I don't want to always start from scratch on one of the pre-built designs.

As an asside so far this latest beta seems pretty shiny excepting of course for the social production not applying at all to military production (though it says the unused social is being applied to military) and social production icons are always greyed out looking now (they used to be bright and easy to see).

In builds before 1.1beta v3 I don't think you can upgrade Core Designs.

You are supposed to be able to do it in V3 but I think it is broken in some way. I have not tried it yet.

There is an option in the Main Menu under Interface tab, to allow you to either keep all components when upgrading designs, or strip them away. You choice and it can be changed while the game is in progress, depending on what you want to do. Very flexible.

Upgrading ships is broken in V3 in that when you upgrade a ship, the old design is automatically obsoleted. This will be fixed in the release version.

Thanks,

I didn't know the old design going obsolete was a mistake, though I do like the idea of keeping the old design around (so I could make several variations on a base shape via upgrade). I will see what difference having that option off when I go to upgrade a core design has (if it works as intended leaving all hardpoints intact or strips core designs just the same).

just for future reference, right under the recent posts box here on the left is a box labeled search, and you can search the whole forums, so now you know where it is.

I noticed this one too. In latest beta3 if you upgrade core designs it strips em down fully. But if you disable the option "remove components what ever" it actually keeps all the stuff. So at the moment it´s keep all or lose all with Core ship upgrade.

Iam glad this is beta, imagine the pain if something like this would occur in release version!

actualy in the release version you aren't allowed to upgrade core designs.

I just finished reading the fine manual lastnight and noted the text "... you can't upgrade any of the core designs." It would be a bonus they are adding in if they make it possible from here on out (which it sounds like they did add in when not stripping components on upgrade )

It also seems as if the disable engine trails option is backwards (under interface I think). I noticed this is unchecked and I haven't seen a single engine trail in battle. Meanwhile the manual explains this option as "Displays the exhaust from engines...." and it sugjests turning this option off on lower end GPUs? I could just be having a graphics problem on this though... heh
