For those who aren't happy with the default star names in GalCiv3, I offer two different mods that change all but racial homeworld stars and planets to "official" sounding names used by present day astronomers. This mod has been tested with GalCiv3 versions 1.7 or 1.8, with or without Mercenaries DLC.
Named & Bayer Stars Only
http://www.nexusmods.com/galacticcivilizations3/mods/78
This mod includes 2,170 names. It has nothing but "legal" astronomical names, including the most common name for a star, or its Bayer designation. There are no fictional names, alternate names, or Flamsteed names in this list.
Official Sounding Star Names
http://www.nexusmods.com/galacticcivilizations3/mods/79
This mod includes 3,790 names. This is the exact number in the original GalCiv3 file, to insure maximal compatibility. It includes all commonly used star names (including alternates), all possible Bayer designations, including older constellations as well as the "official" modern 88 constellations, and a few Flamsteed names (including 82 Eridani, 36 Ophiuchi, and 60 Ophiuchi) to achieve the 3,790 total.
NOTES
There are no modern, personal preference, or made-up names in these lists.
Each mod on nexus includes a description of how to install, how to incorporate this into other mods, and technical references for star naming conventions used in the "real world" (Sol, 2016 CE).
I find my enjoyment of science fiction increases when names sound "more official." These mods are for those with similar tastes.
