Hi everyone,
I have been wondering whether or not a mod idea I have is possible. I have looked around the forums and mod sites but haven't seen what I'm looking for.
For me the game is beautiful and very engaging but I keep getting yanked out of the immersion by two things,
1. Techs are too easy to get. I feel its unrealistic for tech to be researched so quickly. I can see research and develo0pment in Governance, Areas of Construction being correct in how long they take but for Weapons Tech, Armor Tech, Sensors, etc it just seems unrealistic. Think about the stages from research to testing to manufacturing to deployment. Before any tech is made it has to be theorized then it needs to be created, then tested and then before it can be widely used it has to be modified for mass production, tweaked and facilities need to be modified in order to accommodate the new design and even then in order to deploy them into the ship modifications need to be made such as power routing, space made for it, etc. This process at minimum in my mind should take years or 1 year at the least. So the first component of this mod is simple, an adjustment to increase research costs for all items by 1 to 2 or even 3 years.
2. The main thing that bothers me the most is how in campaign I need to re-research stuff that has already been researched in a previous mission. Does that make sense? I mean for instance Arcea M1. I got a lot of research into Beam Tech and planetary invasion in order to defeat and invade the Drengin. Does it make sense that the very next mission I have to research those again? Did my scientists just suffer a memory loss and all data they compiled erased? To me it breaks the immersion it makes me feel like the game is making me rinse and repeat the empires development over and over not letting me feel like my advances are important. So this is what I don't know is possible. Can the tech tree or campaign files be modified to give a persistent tech level throughout the campaign? At normal research costs this would be ridiculous but remember I'm upping tech research costs by years.
To me this would allow me to feel like I'm actually rebuilding Earth's empire in the main campaign. I'm not wanting a cheat super civilization in fact I'm making the game a bit boring but much more epic and unique as the time and cost in researching new tech will require greater investment.
Any help, thoughts or comments are welcome.
