Galciv 3 is a great, enjoyable game but there is one thing that needs fixing very badly; i.e. list managing. The way the game manages ship lists and designer lists sucks tremendously and takes away some of the enjoyment of the game. Let me clarify.
Why is there not a simple checkbox in the setup screen to NOT display any new ship designs? Part of the fun of the game is in ship designing to optimize all the research you've done and every time you research a new technology, up pops a list of dozens of blah ship designs that are not wanted. It makes it hard to find the ship you want to build, and you have to cycle through them all and delete all the new suggested designs. For us old pros who've been playing Galciv for years, we don't need our hands held, so just add the option to suggest NO designs at all. Newbies can leave it at the default.
Even worse is the fleet/ship list. It seems to default to a creation-time list, which now has several sorting tabs which are vaguely functional for a bit but which revert to the original order every time you have a battle, use up a constructor, etc. If you have a large list of ships (especially if you've researched the ideology which gives every planet 3 defenders), every time you battle a pirate with a survey fleet or build a starbase, the list recreates itself and you lose track of where you are and have to search through the entire list again. This makes each turn about ten times longer than it should be if the list was handled properly. And that little blush of color on the top and bottom line of the selected ship is not a vey good marker, especially if you're playing a race that has white ships. I didn't even notice it until my current Krynn-like faction used green ships; then it was a little more visible but not very much. Not everybody has perfect vision and some people are color-deficient.
The fix is easy but maybe other priorities were more important. Just add a simple pointer to the current ship you are looking at and want to move. Just keep that pointer at the top of the ship list window (like Twilight of the Arnor did) and if the ship dies or you've used it up by colonizing or creating a base, just move the pointer and pop the new ship at the top of the window. As to the sorting tabs, the one that most players would probably use but is missing is TYPE. Why not have all the different types bundled together in the list? If a ship has a survey module, it's a surveyor. If it has a transport module, it's a transport. I like to handle all the constructors together, then the colony ships, then the transports, and then the fleets. A fleet sitting on a base or planet shouldn't even be listed as a fleet because you can't move it anyplace. Once you eject a ship, it gets added to the list as a single ship. If you eject another from the same place, it forms a new fleet. If you eject all of them, the base fleet disappears anyway, so why have all that redundancy? It just makes the game longer and less enjoyable.
If these were fixed in the new opt-in which I'm just going to try, great. If not, I'll just endure until they are.
