Here's a list of issues i compiled from playing through my first game.
Machine: I'm on a min-spec machine with Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, and Integrated graphics. I have all FX turned off. The game barely runs and requires much patience.
Bugs / Glitches:
- Custom Ship Icons: Icons for ships that i created myself do not appear in the game (ship list on Designer Screen, fleet contents box, fleet management screen, Ship Battle Victory Screen, and similar places). The icon is still selectable but is otherwise totally invisible. This affects all ships that i made. System-generated ships properly display an icon.
- Colony Screen: costs in the build queue do not update if i change something on the Govern subscreen economy wheel.
- Colony Screen: When picking terraforming tiles, there is often a ghost image of a recently selected building that is present on one tile.
- Colony Screen: When scrolling through the build queue, tooltips block the view. Tooltip widgets should be explicitly destroyed if the mouse wheel is used over the list.
Usability Issues and Suggestions:
- There is no good way to find the range of a ship or ship class in various ship tooltips, especially in fleet management. This is a problem any time you try to assemble a fleet with mixed ranges because the range of the fleet is obviously limited by the most lowest-end ship. If i could see which ship was holding up the show, i could pop it out.
- Fleet management in general is awkward and difficult. Any time fleets need to be split or merged, I'm still not sure quite how to go about it.
- [Debatable] Ships should not land after a successfull invasion. If they do, i have to individually pop them all back onto the map before i can move on, and then they often are on the other side of the planet, wasting several moves.
- There is no "launch here" option when launching fleets from planets or shipyards. This was a small, but appreciated GC2 feature that needs to come back.
- There needs to be an "Eject All" option on planets and shipyards. Otherwise i'm stuck individually clicking through the entire list.
- A "RESUME GAME" button the main screen would be appreciated. This would just auto-load the most recently saved game.
- A "Quick Save" button on the very top of the main map screen would be nice to have. Paranoiacs like me save early and save often!
- Diplomacy: A "Clear" button to clear the current offer would be easier than cancelling and reentering the trade offer.
- UP: On a low end machine, the visual popups for each race do not appear at all. I totally understand why, though.
- There needs to be some indication of how the economy wheel is set for each colony. A mini-wheel perhaps, or even just a flag that would display "general" or "custom" would help when scrolling through the planets list.
- There is no apparent way to remove a constructor from a starbase once it has arrived but has not yet been utilized.
- On some of my colonies on the main map, the tooltip will say "{YOUR_RACE_NAME} Influence 1.0x". These are on planets that are well within my influence boundary and clearly are no in danger from other races. Generally, this only shows if another race has influence over one of my planets, but it seems to be confused. I'm me!
- The shipyard ship-selector menu needs to indicate hull size for each option. They all look visually the same size in the list.
- Invasion Screen: When I'm defending and it says "Chance of Success", it's not clear as to whether that means chance of invader getting through or chance of me successfully defending.
- When setting a ship to pass, guard, or sentry, the screen should move to the next unassigned ship instead of waiting for me to push the button in the lower right corner again. (GC2-style)
- The pan/rotate controls on the ship designer are wonky. GC2 did it really well. I'd be happy if you just totally lifted the mouse input code right out and plopped in into GC3. Similar wonkiness on the map itself (same code, i imagine).
