When i first bought this game ~ a year ago, I was very impressed with the concepts and the fast paced, fun gameplay. However it seemed that a relitively low number of people were playing, and I was constantly frustrated with multiplayer issues and difficulty establishing games. Now that I've decided to try it again, there are considerably fewer people playing. Did something happen to cause this game to 'go down the tubes'? It really looked like it should / would be successful. I'm not trying to knock the game at all (in fact I still think it's extremely creative and fun), I just want to know what happened.

No, it was supposed to be a mainstream version of Defense of the Ancients. Easy to learn and hard to master by focusing less on twitch reflexes + micro management and focusing more on learning skill timing and team play.
Unfortunately pirates ruined it for everyone simply by making the online service unavailable for legitimate users when the game 1st launch, resulting in some grumpy reviews which ultimately led to the game not being as popular as it should have been.
The end result... those who liked it, liked it alot.... but the community never really grew big enough to gain enough inertia to afford the possibility of paid DLC or an expansion, and thus top notch support.
So it's more accurate to say the player base is small, not niche.
