In a 5v5, you only need 10% of the players to be rude and obnoxious to ruin it for everyone.

Though many players take it too far, most of us use this as a guideline for determining which players should be on which team to get the most even fight possible.  It's no fun for everyone if one team just slaughters the other.

I'm pretty much the opposite of you.  I'm a guy who has a good 15 years of RTS experience under my belt, half of that primarily multiplayer.  I spent a good two weeks studying up here on the forums before going online, and get on a win streak.  Soon enough, people start booting me because my stats are too good and they don't believe that I'm a beginner.  I've got well over a hundred games now and people know me by name, so that's not an issue anymore, but let me tell you that there's just no pleasing some of these people.

I have a hunch that there is only 1 person who keeps making these posts about how bad the online community is...

It was only a matter of time before smurfing spread to the forums.

I get this alot also when I do get one. One night I was just on in the chat room waiting for some DS players. Soon half the Lobby 1 had changed their names to -Ue_'Insert anything here', then went to griefing other players as they were assoiated with me. Its not one person who is complaining. Ive never created a topic due to Ive watch how the online crew responds, Its the same story everytime. Yet nothing has changed in the mind set of the online crowd.

And unforutnaly nothing is going to change. Till the current Online crowd get bored of SINS and moves on; hopefully allowing a better additude crowd to take their place, then maybe we can get a good community going.

I think that most of the regular players are pretty decent people.  Unfortunately there are a couple jerkwads out there who give online multiplayer a bad name.  I suggest that you just ignore it and remind yourself that anyone who gets upset over something that happens in a silly computer game is probably very inexperienced in life and immature.  Just imagine them as being virgins who cannot get dates or as the kinds of impatient people who commit silly traffic infractions.  I just laugh to myself when an ally starts talking shit during a game.  I think it's actually kind of funny when teammates start to get upset if I have a bad game or am too slow to attack or make some bad decisions, etc.  "It's a computer game!  If we lose, it isn't anything to get excited or worked up about!  Take a chill pill!"

I play another game called Onslaught in Unreal Tournament 2004, which is a vehicle based first-person shooter where you try to control certain locations on a map with the goal of destroying a key structure at the enemy's base.  This game has built-in voice comm and one of the people who plays likes to berate the other people on his team.  "You stupid fucking morons!  You let them get Node 8.  You deserve to lose."  This guy just rants and raves when his team starts losing.  All of the regulars are familiar with him and they just laugh and make fun of him.

I say for you to stick through it, and dont change your name, the most important way to gain respect in the online community is to obtain an identity that people will remember and remember previous games with.  I dont know if its just me but when I am judging a player's skill, its more important to me to remember previous games with them than to look at their actual account.  So stick through the jerks, get some games in with the regulars, and in no time people will vouch for you and you will have an identity that differs you from smurfs. 

And dont forget. Watch them replays.

So what I gather from this post is that the majority of people posted in this thread have no trust for anyone in this community, whilst the few others have enough decency to recognize the problem and offer solutions. I think I get the trend. My name has been "Gimpy" in game since I bought the game and that's the only player I've had on my account.

I also take it that people have polluted this thread with accusations of what you call "smurfing"? Pretty lame term to say the least, but essentially I'm being accused of being multiple people? Wonderful. I think I've seen enough through the reactions to this thread to realize this game isn't worth my time.

I will admit I met a nice guy yesterday who was offering help and advice to newer eager to learn players...Admiral something, Raynar or something. I started up a game with him, another guy that wanted to learn, a more experienced player and 2 AI. Was having a good time asking questions and being helped but then the game crashed.

i agree 100% in fact if im host i like to have a noob or to so that they can start the process of learning players who are jerks to noobs are killing us. We do need more players which is where the noobs come in.

Sins has been out for awhile these people who are left are the community face the facts i hate to be this blunt but its true others may come and go but these people has stood by the game. Diplo might give us a bust for a few mounths but adventully those people will leave and once again it will be the same ~121 players again.

The term smurf is used referring to people that are experienced/pro that make a new name attempting to hide their skill/identity.  It is crappy because you never know what you are getting on your team and can lead to unfairly balanced teams and thus a win for the smurf.  So anyone that is unknown with few stats could possibly be some well known player pretending otherwise so they can stack a team in their favor.  It is very unfair to noobs who get accused of being a smurf and blamed for their teams loss because their skill wasn't taken in consideration with teams.  They smurf for their own selfish reasons and most do not seem interested in stopping.  In my opinion it kills the community.  Nothing is done about it except a few gripes on the forum which are promptly ignored.  Sorry you have had a bad experience gimpy.  There are a few polite people out there but there are griefers and jackasses too just like there is everywhere else.

Well you see... its because In other games, you play against someone, and you will not likely see them ever again, or by the time you see them again, you wont even remember their name so you just forget about all the trash talking done to you.

But in Sins.... you'll see them the next day.... or the day after..... And just anytime you're on.

Everybody can and should play with and how they like--but do it with people of a like mind.  Meaning don't pretend to be a noob so you can get a noob you can crush to play you [smurfing]. 

Don't be a hypocrite and want only to play the best players but then let a noob in to even teams then snuff him and spit him out without a thought.  Use a pass protected game good for both of you.

If you are really good and you play someone who isn't--instead making it an attempt to erase him in  new record time, give him a few pointers and a little chat then end the game.

As to the number of games--some of us are pretty good gamers but don't have hours a day to sit in mom and dad's house playing every day and all day because we have families, work and bills to pay.  We'll eventually catch onto  and up to you when we have enough time to learn the cheap tricks.

As for the real jerks--eveybody kill them dead...over and over 

Everybody is here to have fun.  Value other people's fun too and you will actually have more.

And yeah, pretty much every game has arrogant players.
