It isn't too bad - you can get games if you are on in US/Europe prime time. Other times can be a be hit and miss. Entrenchment has split the community a bit as some are still playing vanilla, but most of the more regular players play Entrenchment
I would say that things have gotten considerably better... i had a 3v3 game fill up a few days ago in less than 5 minutes. I wouldnt abandon sins, there are plenty of players so long as you're on at the right times. Maybe we could play a game or two.
You can find games if you're patient and espeically if you are willing to play whatever with and against whoever. However, if you are picky and insist on playing only certain maps or 4v4 or 5v5 and/or with only balanced teams or games where you are on a stacked team, then it will be tougher.
Your best bet for finding a game you'd want to play is during European and North American prime time, say from 3 pm U.S. EST to Midnight. U.S. EST.
what multiplayer population?
A buddy of mine and I logged on yesterday and played like 4 or 5 multiplayer games back to back with little or no waiting. We played a 5v5 (which unfortunately crashed) and 3 or 4 2v2s. It never took more than 10 minutes to find/setup a game. Even the 5v5 was relatively smooth being setup.
