If any of you had visited my other post, you'd see that my first playthrough of Demigod was a tournament as the Rook.
First Impressions:
This game gets fast in a hurry, and it will certainly keep you focused. I remember trying to see what all the items benifits were when I hear the "FIRST BLOOD!" announcement. I subsequently though, "Oh dam...I better get in there!". When I did get in there, I got owned, and I mean OWNED. It took me several rounds to discover that Demigod is as much about knowing when to push as it is about knowing when to pull back. I also learning some other simpler strategies quickly as well as how to exploit the AI (I played on "Normal" btw), though I realize playing multiplayer will force me to adapt accordingly.
In terms of the Rook, I lol-ed a lot. I LOVE watching him wind up his hammer slam, and it is so entertaining to seem him simply destroy anything and everything when your team is making the final push on the citadel. I def don't know the best way to level him up (and I also know my item and citadel upgrade picks are severely poor), but while others seem to like the Boulder Roll + Hammer Slam combo, I like to level up his Health and his Tower upgrades (the arrows, lightning, treb things). The Health would keep me from having to leave a battle so that the damage from my towers would be non-stop. The funniest thing for me so far was watching Sedna (who was a level well below mine) come at me, lose have her HP to my towers before she even got in range for anything, then me using Hammer Slam before she even touched me once. Good stuff. I also lol-ed when I was working to bringing down a tower, it had about a third of its hp left, and Regulus shoots a bolt from across the map and downs it. Hilarious.
Another point I'd like to mention is the chaotic nature of the game. Some people have complained (usually uninformed people) that it is hard to see anything and everything is a great big mess. I for one love the chaos, I love the clutter, and I love having a bunch of units crammed onto a thin piece of real-estate.
Overall all I enjoyed my first playthrough immensely, and will have to try the other demigods to see if it's just a Rook thing or a complete package. I sense massive suckage with Generals to start cause I wasn't always the best at managing Rook's mana, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. All in all, thanks for making a great game Stardock!
One final remark:
I LOVE the announcer. The only thing better than a wind-up to Hammer Slam KO is to have some guy with a mega masculine voice say "SMITER!" and have it appear in massive font on the screen. Makes killing a demigod incredibly rewarding on a level beyond stats, xp, or gold etc.
