Many amazing games lack hype up until release unless they are:
1. From a huge company (Pretty much Blizzard or EA)
2. Overhyped through an extremely expensive ad program
3. A sequel to a well known game and/or popular series (Zelda, Halo, Half-life)
Also, let's be honest. Most people are up to date on their hobbies. Gaming is ours. When's the last time you seriously gave a crap about some ad? It's bad enough that many ad agencies are shutting down because the only thing the populace is doing with ads is finding ways to shut them out and this is costing millions. Good, in my humble opinion.
There's no point in hype usually, when it's released word of mouth will do the rest. DoTA was this tiny, crappy mod no one knew about until people found out it was fun and it became popular, thus spreading the word. That's pretty much the same with any game that ends up being well known and popular.
Most hyped games set up wrong expectations anyways and then end up hurting themselves when people buy it and don't get the product they imagined.
