Hello all,
I was wondering by comparison if the variance in capital ship weapons affects different armour as seen in this ref chart? Ie. A ship has laser, beam and autocannon - does that mean each weapon type is particular effective against a type of armour?
I'm pretty sure that different weapon types have no specific different effect on opposing shields and armor. Rather I think all ships receive a "damage class" that applies to all of their weapons. You do ask an interesting question--what are the damage multipliers for capital ships against the different armor classes? Is it safe to assume that it's similar to what the heavy fighting cruisers (Kodiaks, Destras, Enforcers) get?
Second, for the map editor - is there a way to manually edit the placement of planets? I don't quite get why the editor places my 'home planets' at the edge of the universe and the rest of the colonizable planets around the sun. It seems less of a map editor and more of a 'input stuff but it doesn't matter because we'll randomize everything for you.'
The "Map Designer" will build the maps automatically for you but they aren't necessarily all that worthwhile or interesting. However, you can design maps exactly as you like, pinpointing the location of each planet and star, with the Galaxy Forge program. You can even download other people's Galaxy Forge maps (though older ones might not work with the most recent versions of the game--you can fix them with Harpo's map updater program).
You can find a pack of other people's custom maps that will work with the most recent versions of the game here and there is even an auto-installer program for it thanks to Darvin.

You can learn more about where to put Galaxy Forge-made maps and about how to find your Sins Application Data folder (which is good to know anyway) in this thread:
