To start I don't have a clue how to mode. I took a programing course in grade 9 and failed horribly(60% or so final) and it was Turring probably the easiest code to use. So this is only an idea I am throwing out there and I have no intend to create this myself. I also have no idea if any of this is possible to do in Sins. Anyways, on to my idea...
The basic idea is to have the game revolve around ships that are bigger and better forms of capital ships. It would also be pretty much the only ship/ships you would control. Now controling one ship probably wouldn't be very fun without something else included. This is where the "Energy" comes in. The Energy would be the ships power, everything the ship needs would use energy. Weapons, engines, life support, and shields would all use energy. Consider one ship has a 100 energy capacity, life support would use up say 15/100 of the ships energy. These numbers would remain constant. When the ship is moving the engines would use Energy bringing it to say 40/100 depending on how fast you want the ship to move, this can be controled, 0% being idle not using any energy, 100% being the fastest the ship can move using 25 energy, anything in between would use lower then 25 energy. Now for the guns, they would use a number of systems depending on the weapon type. For you normal laser medium range weapon you would require 1 energy for targeting computers and 5 energy to fire every X seconds, the rate of fire can be increased or decreased by using firing modes(fire at will, salvo fire, precise fire) The Energy usage of the ship would "spike" every time a gun is fired so there would be a certain amount of energy that would be marked "spiked" or something to show it isn't a constant usage like life support and the energy usage could go that high at times.
Each gun on the ship can me manualy controled so that you could change the rate of fire for each gun and tell what ship for the gun to target. Another thing that could be added is customize. You would have a ship design and areas where certain guns could be placed. For example you can have an area where only long range guns can be placed and the user can choose from the different long range weapons to put in there, each one being different(damage, energy usage, accuracy). The only problem I see is how to make the gameplay work. You could create a DotA style gameplay where you level your ship, research different techs to improve your ship, and destroy the other sides base or planet. All this would allow for better looking ships that most people seem to want as well as better graphics because there wouldn't be a chance of having hundreds of ships on screen at once. The ships would feel more powerful being able to take more damage and having say 20-30 guns on a single ship.
I could go on and on with my ideas but I will leave it at this. Thoughts, is this possible? I would think this would be easier with Homeworld but then I wouldn't be able to play if it was made =P
P.S. If anyone doesn't know what DotA is, it is a Warcraft 3 custom Map. There are many different heroes to pick one and each has their own spells. It is a 5v5 and each person picks a single hero. There are three lanes where AI controled units patrol down to attack the enemy. The players can gain xp because the AI controled units attack eachother making their units take less damage. The point of the game is to get gold by killing enemy units, heroes, and buildings. You gain levels to spells, buy items. The end goal is to destroy the other teams "wonder", a special building inside both teams base.
