I agree star wars fits the bill, just not so keen. I'm all star wars out.

Few ships on the Human side, yeah.. but if you throw in Atlantis you can combine the two into enough. You could have your X-302s and Ancient Jumpers as fighters/bombers, Prometheus class (for lack of a better name, I don't believe they ever named that ship class), Aurora class Ancient cruisers (that we've seen several of), as well as a few Asgard ships (the O'neill anyone?) that appeared throughout the show (and now Earth has all of the Asgard knowledge anyway, at the end of the SG1 series). Between that you could scrounge enough ships.

Gould and Wraith would make logical enemies, and there are plenty of ships on each of those sides.

Firstly:

Go to a site called Raven Star Studios, and you will find plenty of inspiration for BSG ships outside of the current series.

Secondly I think this game is perfect for Wing Commander, but just as much for Babylon 5, Star Wars, and not as much for Star Trek, but its certainly still very do-able.

I'd say B5 is the best as opposed to SW, as their are better defined sides...

in SW, you have Empire Vs Rebels in one time frame, or Republic Vs Confederacy in another time frame, so you really are not encouraged to go beyond 2 factions (meh) and the type of travel was more open ended.

In B5 we have roughly a dozen or more factions with very well defined ships all existing in ONE time frame, the travel system was closer to Sins (jump gates at particular points, or simple jump engines) and there was equally as many ship models already made.

In Star Trek it has been established since the movie era that you cant fight while in warp. With the exceptions of a few inconsistent episodes most of the major battles have been fought at sublight speeds. The only modding problem is having to physically be in a gravity well to fight, and the phase lanes themselves which i hear can be modded out. There are some other mod obstacles like cloaking. What to do about carriers, and what not, but I have faith that me, and my crew can figure this stuff out.

EVE Online should be pretty good. 4 races, all with multiple ships to choose from in each size category. Also special abilities for each race, altho somewhat limited in that area I guess, compared to other "worlds" at least.

The way EVE and Sins work, in regards to travelling, is pretty similar, although in EVE the warp lanes are between systems rather than planets.

A Babylon 5 mod would be great. I can't think of any battles during the series that occurred inside 'subspace', so there isn't any problem with SoaSE phase space travel. Hmm, in fact I remember one episode were it was mentioned that any attempts at fighting in subspace were always disastrous for all sides involved...or they said something to that effect.

A small problem might be the lack of stealth technology available to the Shadow faction. Maybe we could compensate for it with quicker jump times or give their ships an 'armortype' that includes a chance to miss for most/all weapons?

Well we don't know if the Vasari or Advent will have a stealth capacity so that still may be possible... but honestly why would you even try to make the Shadows and other Ancients playable? Thats like beating up babies with baseball bats.

They of course would be great for a special 'militia' force around certain planets lol!

At any rate, I think B5 would fit best/be the funnest. There is just soooo much room and we have allot of predesigned star chart information to make a huge map from.

in a 10 player game you could have the following races:

Earth Alliance, Centauri, Minbari, Narn, Drakh, Dilgar, Gaim, Drazi, Brakiri, and the Vree.

The other races could have assigned special planets and have unique fleets of militia forces guarding their precious worlds. These would be the Shadows, Vorlon, Pak-Mara, and the Abbai.

Or you could hone the playable races to just the big 5; ie EA, Centauri, Minbari, Narn, and the Drakh (or Dilgar?). Aside from the Dilgar being extinct all of these races exist at the same time. Obviously the Pirates would be the Raiders... though special maps could be rigged where the pirates are the Shadows or Vorlons, and the players are actually locked in a team against them! Thus the bounty would be against your friends and taking out the Pirate homeworld of Zha-Ha-Dum would bring victory.

man just so much could be done... early EA versus Dilgar campaign, with plentiful League of Non-Alligned World players as FFA players. Or Narn VS Centauri War with Minbari and EA as FFA... or late EA versus Centauri as the latest lost tale stories suggest.

PS: there was a battle in Hyperspace in one of the Movies I think... its a disaster for everyone... not worth trying to implement into the mod.

For a Babylon 5 mod, since it is netural territory maybe have the station in the center of the system instead of a star

I really liked those Earth/Shadow Tech hybrid Destroyers that briefly appeared during the series. Too bad they all got wiped out.

The only time "stealth" per say was used was when the Vorlons "folded" hyper-space to hide their fleet. The shadows, and other first ones, generally didn't use stealth half so much as they were way off the "Hyper-space beacons" -- e. g. they traveled in "here there be dragons!" territory.



Don't forget, the Dilgar attacked the league, then EA joined in -- you'd need Centauri, Mimbari, and Narn as the neutrals there.

LOL what started out as a wing commander mod thread got hijacked into an all genre mod thread.

As for wing commander which i should have posted earlier. It should be a post Prophecy mod. While i liked the game series, there was just way too much cheese in WC3. Prophecy, and secret ops was pretty damn good.

An RTS mod based on the EVE-Online universe is doable. There is one in work for Homeworld 2 as i speak. You are right you cant duplicate the complexity of EVE in Sins, or HW2. However you can take a general approach. For example the Amarr Armageddon battleship. It can only be fitted with 1 type of weapon. The short ranged rapid firing mega pulse laser for the mod. The Apocalypse on the other hand can be fitted with long range slow firing mega beam lasers. Damage will have to be general (no kinetic, thermal, EM, or explosive damage types). ECM, and ECCM will also have to be general if it can be done at all.

Stuff like microwarp drives, webifiers, and warp scramblers could possibly be done as ability's that have to be researched. Im just speculating on this.

The Factions of an EVE mod (all of them are human by the way), Will have to be very unique unlike in EVE itself. Example the Caldari will need to specialize in Missiles, and Shield tech. Gallante will need to specialize in Railguns, and Drones. The Amarr Lasers, and Armour. Minmatar Projectile guns, autocannons, and a balanced mix of shield, and armour. In EVE itself you can fit a ship with any kind of weapon you train for so you rarely see an all missileboat caldari ship (with the exceptions of the Caracal, Raven, and Cerberus). I hear they nerfed the hell out of the Drake. I stopped playing EVE 3 months ago.
