BSG would need an open connection map (ie, without Phase Lanes). IF an open connection map can be modded into Sins, then no problem (and I suspect it can be as that was how the original game was meant to be). IF it can't, then a BSG mod wouldn't work very well. Nor would Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 mods work well without open maps.

The primary problem a BSG mod faces is fitting battlestar/basestar model to the Sins mesh standard. If you managed to get the turrets, launch bays, etc. defined so that Sins could look at it, the data files would be relatively easy. And there are tons of battlestar models out there, theres probably someone who would let you use theirs.

Not to mention animations. I'd like to see those turrets moving to aim at the bad guys.

I also hope we can mod out the phase lanes. I do plan on doing a Star Trek mod for Sins (A resurrection of my old Homeworld mod, but on a grand scale), but the lanes will toss a monkey wrench into those plans.

I don't think model importing will be too much of an issue if the Forge Tools can convert a .3ds or .obj into .mesh format. Textures are standard .dds, and .tga format Sins also has bump, and specular mapping. You just have zoom in very close to see the bump maps on the current ships

It's not just conversion. so far as i can tell weapon ports and such are defined in the mesh file...

Lol, I'm sure if you can't get a totally connected universe you can delete phase space altogether and implement a 'jump drive' into the ships, this would work the best anyway. But even though it wouldn't make the mod seem as if you were playing a game designed around those series, lets face it, lol, the game isn't designed around those series'. Not saying a good mod can't be made, but even with the phase lanes it would still be a good mod. Cause no matter which game I have ever played, if I got a mod that changes the game to some sci fi series, although fun if it's a good mod, it's never 100% accurate to the series. So even if you can't get rid of phase lanes, tough luck, the mod will probably still rock.

Which is why im trying to find out which modeling program the devs used. If they used 3dsmax creating weapon, engine, and nav light hard points shouldnt be a problem. If they used Lightwave, different program, but similar method. I just hope to god they DIDN'T use MAYA. Like Relic did for HW2. That alone is the sole reason why i never modded HW2

have no animation etc experience whatsoever, but i do have an idea about the storyline,

why not base it during the first cylon wars you can then use planets for both cylons and for the colonies the ships will be fairy similar - the galactica and much of her fighters are from that era,

some "battlestar historians" might come up with objections but this seems like a good idea for those people who want to create a battlestar mod

You know, you don't have to follow the shows timeline. You can make it up as you go. But I agree, a setting in the first Cylon war would be unique. However we do not know what the cylon ships looked like back then.

if i can remember right they in the pilot episodes on the space station and on the museum hanger on the galactica they had pictures/exibits of the old cylons they looked just like the cylons from the original series
so i would assume the ships would be the same, basically a cylon wars era would let you use planets and to have full scale colony v cylon battles

I'm amazed that after 4+ years of the new BSG being in production and many licensing deals that there is not yet a galactic scale space simulation based on the show on the market yet nor announced as far as I know - go figure...

i think there was one crappy looking playstation game but it looked rubbish definitly not galactic and there is a mod for battlefield 2 as well that looks good, but again not galactic scale,

i was thinking that it would be hard to structure a game around the story, but then i thought look at homeworld its a great game with a similar storyline,

seeking a new homeworld ---tick

i think some of the creators of homeworld are battlestar fans maybe the idea sprang from childhood tv memories lol

Actually, I've heard several times that Homeworld was originally going to be a Battlestar Galactica game, but for some reason it didn't work out so they created their own storyline.

OT but I think peeps that are into BSG should keep an eye on these guys...

Two vids I really liked on their site was the multiplayer test, the viper & cylon really show off some moves. Check out the Galactica salvo fire test movie if ya wanna see how well they made Galactica's well known batteries open up.

A tad more on topic then, there are alot of models floating around .. I seen countless X3 models on the web to start with for Galactica, vipers and god knows what else. If you get permission cant these be used? (Im a nerd, but modeling isnt my strongest point

)

And I do hope the devs find the time to add moveable turrets, even if its just an option the modders can use.

when you want to use other peoples models you have to ask for permission first considering they put all the time and effort into them, i suppose it depends from person to person what they will say

You can make them up as well, have your pick between the new Double, three pointed star, or the old diabolo shaped basestars etc.

As I said on the SLI forums I have been following this project for about two years and it is a true labor of love. RDM should be talking with these guys. Because with a little official support it has the promise to quite possible become the all time best series to game product. When one considers the Srar Trek and Star Wars fiasco titles that were crammed out the door on a formula system this thing is gold. Hell I even sent Frogboy an email about it early last year in the hopes that SD would consider picking up the project as an official project.
