Went to see School for Scoundrels with my wife and daughter this afternoon and had a pleasant time. Went to an older theatres in an area that I correctly assumed was not going to be that busy and had the place pretty much to ourselves. (I think there were about 4 or 5 other individuals in the place with us, if that).
The movie itself was entertaining. Not the greatest thing ever, but far from the worst. Billy Bob Thorton is just about perfect for a role like he had here, and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) was good in his role as well. The supporting characters weren't bad, but I don't think anyone had any break out performances here.
I'd say the movie was predictable, and unfortunately as with many movies that make it to theatres these days, a few plot points are telegraphed from a mile away and/or were basically given out in trailers and previews. I wish that wasn't the case, but then again if you don't see enough clips and get enough of a feel for a movie you normally won't feel compelled to go see it either.
I will say that the trailers that I saw before the movie today were less than inspiring. I can't remember a single one of them. That's sad, and not good news for the movie industry as they are obviously failing to excite me about many future offerings. There are a few movies in the pipeline I'm interested in, but not many, and of those I don't think I'd care that much if I missed them really.
Anyway, if you can find a matinee showing of School for Scoundrels, go and enjoy. I don't know that I'd want to pay full fare for it, but it was ok for a matinee (discount) showing.
