Confused about focus items

I can see how the military (building ships) and social (building structures) focus buttons work in your planet view screen, but I'm not sure I get the research one.

Do you have to have a lab structure on the planet for it to work? Sometimes there might be lulls in building, so I wondered if clicking that would actually make a difference in your research if you didn't have a research building there.

I guess if you DO have to have a lab for it to work, does this mean you should always put a lab on each planet to utilize that focus when you are not building?

Do the cittizens just join in on research whether there is a lab there or not?

You don't need to add labs on each planet to utilize the focus since each new colony starts with a bit of industry and research when it is built (12 points I think). However I don't think you would get much benefit using research focus if your colony doesn't have many research labs in the first place.

I still find the focus feature a little confusing since it's not very clear how much you get by focusing in one area in exchange for reducing focus in other areas but it still is useful, just wish it was explained a bit better.
