Note that this post contains debateable spoilers about the campaign mission so stop reading now if you care about that kind of thing.
So I'm on the campaign mission (I think it's the 5th mission) where it's you and 3 allied races vs the Dread Lords. All the DL ships are no defenses 31 missle attack and you have no missle defenses yet. Supposedly, you and your 3 allied races (I'm still slow on the names - the green yellow and light blue guys let's just say) are teamed up to beat down the Dread Lords. Sadly, I think the allies AI is lacking in the extreme in this case. Normally the AI is great but oy - this was bad.
First up, my allies seemingly only build trade ships and troop transports. Nearly no actual military ships built. Secondly, they seemed to research very little tech despite having plenty of worlds - I ended up selling them tons of tech on the cheap. What little tech they did have they got insanely cheap with - apparently they scored Quantum Driver 3 and HD Spike 3 off of Dread Lord world captures and hey, that's great. Wanna share that stuff with your teammate the humans who are the only ones actually fighting the war? What? No? You'd rather die at the hands of the Dread Lords and screw me too? Yay then!
Seriously though, I'm curious as to wether this is AI being dense or actually 'too smart'. Perhaps the AI of my teammates was looking at the incredible stats of the Dread Lord ships and refusing to even try to build a force to fight them instead reasoning that since the Dread Lord's worlds often have little ship defense they can win by invasion alone? And maybe the high level weapon tech just shows up as too 'valuble' in the mind of the AI to ever think of trading even to a teammate?
