Ok i got a clue.
In the My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 there is the preferences file, on opening the file i actually find the playlist edit option i try to activate it from there but still no go. This option was clearly intended to be in the game but was probably forgotten or postponed , that includin it being mentioned in the manual add to the fact that it should be present. Any1 got a clue on how to tweak the game options programmin to get it to work Id br grateful.

I agree that the ingame music is pretty good, but no track can withstand the scrutiny of 50 hours+ of listening. Until the real thing comes along I recommend WinAmp (Link) and the old Alt-Tab. If you don’t want or can’t Alt-Tab here is a fix for that too:
In WinAmp chose Options -> Preferences or just press Ctr+P.
Check the box labelled ‘Enabled’ at the top and if you like to you could also remap the keys to something you like better. This will enable global keys.

Not an ingame feature but it works fine.
The only downside I can see is that a minor race or two gets stomped every time Metalicas Black album comes up

Looks like the music playlist is hard-coded into the executable. It would be MUCH cooler if there were an xml file with sections for "Space", "War", "Losing", "Alliance", "Exploration", etc. Just whatever categories the builtin track selector uses but exposed to the end-user.
