Worst Turtorial EVER!!!!

hi there, i used to play the original donkeys years ago when it came out and you could actually fight on the planet (why did they take that out?) and you could slightly contorl your ships in Battle (rather then just watch?why was that taken out to?) but i have to say i aint played it in years and now i bought and tried out this fresh, clicked turtorial to find it is just a bunch of useless videos, sure they rabbit on about this and that, but there pretty useless at the end of the day? i mean with games like Civ 4 atleast it puts you throuhs tpe by step so you cna see how it affects and so on, in these turtorials it tell you what you pretyt much already can tell but doesn't actually help you udnerstand the affects?
i mean im having one hell of a hard time, making a bit of cash, keeping my people happy why trying to actually make a planet half decent as they always get upset? i mean for instance, how does population relate to the number of Military, Research and Social Production numbers you have, does it even relate? how on earth does TP relate to anything at all cuz it dont seem to, to me?why is it my colony apparently produces 12 food M/W yet i only have 5? and why is it by the million when the population is by the billion and the tooltip is to?
can anyone actually help me understand what to do?

Worst tutorial, ever?

I actually liked the tutorial for this game.
Maybe the answers you are looking for can be found in a manual?
The tutorial was all I needed to learn how to play the game decently in under 10 minutes.
The manual will be what I use to learn how to play the game well.
The forums are useful too.
Building space empires impresses the chicks, so you should always try to learn more.

Tip, if you low on cash: Have you built marketing centres/economic space station/sent freighters to other worlds?
If your people are unhappy, have you built happiness improvements, adjusted your taxation levels?

I think the tutorials were well done. Short enough for you to go back and re-learn specifically what you are having trouble with (you can even do it in-game it said), and there are enough topics to give you a good idea about what to expect in your game.
I also really enjoyed the voice acting. No stuttering, and darn it, like most of the game, it was just another example of how a game should be made.

I agree with Luv_Muffin. I thought the tutorials were excellent for what they are intended to be, an intorduction to the game.

Suggestions for future tutorials would be a deeper look at SpaceStations. What do they do, where do you build them, how do you build them and so on.

Perhaps a basic GalCiv Economics tutorial would be good as well, giving some of the basics of population, happiness and so on.

lol, well i wont saying the voice acting was bad, but there are three types of people out there, people that jump in without turtorials, people who like to watch them and people who like to be taught through it bit by bit.
im da bit by bit person. At the end of the day if you play Star Wars Empires At War, that is a very breif ten minute turtorial, however you cna do it in stages that you feel you need and it talks you through it but shows oyu at the sametime.
i sitll would of prefered a bit by bit one
but my main problem is, i have a planet,lets says Earth, loads of building blocks, i will build sya to entertainment centers, a couple of research, a couple factories, then one market, 1 or 2 farms, space port and maybe an emberssy, and the taxtion on say 45% and the production slider say on 80% and yet i will still only have my peoples happiness at 49%? why is that?

I'll admit that I loved Civ 4's tutorial, but GC2's worked fine for me. Sure it is passive, but you can read through it quickly (if you don't want to watch the video) - a fact that makes it easy to go back to it for reference.

maybe because your planet is under the influence?

Alien influence. other cultures slowly swaying your population to their beliefs. check the planet details. there is sometimes a local citizen quote and it might mention another race in it (like "well it's nice here but I think the Tolians have a lot to offer")

I had fun watching the tutorials before I could d/l the game and play. Can't say they are good or bad since I've played way too much Galciv I, but a strategy game with any replayability is going to have a stiff learning curve. Roll up your sleeves and play a few games.

How about you read the manual? You know, the instruction booklet? Though given your writing skills, maybe English is a second language?

I thought the tutorials were great particularly when I only had the digital download and no printed manual. But the on screen tutorial is much easier than reading the paperwork to sort out the important "get started" features and actually showing you where the buttons are. The manual is still there for the detailed information.

I liked the tutorials but in a way I agree. I think it would be more helpful to add an interactive tutorial. There are a lot of concepts in GalCivII that are different than other types of TBS games. Granted, there's not a huge learning curve but I think a basic tutorial covering game essentials and perhaps a little strategy would be a helpful addition.

A lot of new people seem to have difficulty adjusting to the concepts and I think that could be helped with an interactive tutorial.

Also, as was mentioned above, I think the tutorials already in the game would benefit from a remote type control panel with fast forward, rewind, etc.

Disregarding the bad English (I speak 2 languages English, and Bad English)

The reason you are having problems is you have a couple of farms. If this is your home world your colony center already boosts population so you'll have some morale issues, add a farm and it will be worse, add two and say goodnight.

Population only effects taxes, nothing else. It does not add to manufacturing or research. My personal rule of thumb is three entertainment centers per farm (you can change this based on special tiles on the planet or if you have really advanced versions of the entertainment centers).

Above all else, NEVER EVER build more than ONE farm. Trust me on that.

Anything else you build should be based on what you want the planet to specialize in, lots of factories if you want it to pump out ships, lots of research centers if you want it to do a lot of research, market centers if you want more cash, embassies if you want to spread a little influence, etc etc.

I am the kind of person who just likes to jump into a game and give it a few tries then start looking up what I am doing wrong. That said I think the game could benefit from a "mission" tutorial. With all the great voice acting it would not be that big of a deal to make a scenario were you are told, "it would probably be a good idea to build a lab now, labs are helpful because they.........." and so on.

Alike many people here, I'm also a GalCiv1 player. Even though I know the basics from the first edition, the tutorials were pretty good in giving me a run-down on what I those Stardockers added in GC2. The lack of interaction during the tutorials may not be the best method of teaching, but you can always start a civilization in an easy mode (cakewalk, beginner, etc.) and give it a whirl. Once you get a bit more familiar with the interface and menus, the tutorials make infinitely more sense. If you get lost during an in-game screen, hover your mouse over an icon and it usually provides a tid-bit of info on what will happen when you press it.

Play it a little and you'll love it a lot.

While I wouldn't call them the "worst ever", I agree that they are pretty useless. They don't tell you about gameplay, they only tell you about the features in a very, very limited fashion. They are actually more advertising videos than tutorials. Something you'd give out prior to release to give the people something to drool over.

im sorry about my terrible english, i was rush typing as i had to go and get my new screen and the taxi was outside, i now have a 20" widescreen and my god is there alot of emptyness on websites on each side, espicially google,lol

also please don't attack me Citizen lokiju and tell me to read the manual, i have no printer and i have the digital version and i did use to read it as i went through the game but minimising and re expanding why playing the game causes a dirty lag as you get through it.

i merely have come on ehre to discuss them and ask for advice, i will keep playing and trying out different tricks people have suggested, see where it gets me.

the turtorials weren't the worst but i dont think they were to useful and i defiantly agree could do we have a mini fast foward button.

maybe im on about the wrong game and someone else knows what im on about, there used to be a space sim, like gal civ, and you could build up your planets, but when you laid a building it was all 3d and you would make an army to defend your planet at the same time building your space fleet and starbases and you could design ships to and then when you thought you could use ships special abilities and when you went to attack a planet you would have to fight there army which you controlled in realtime why the space bit was turn based. best building in the game for the planet, was the self destruct button, planet being over run by enemies, you know your going to loose it, make sure u had that building built and blow it up,lol

Well , the tutorial is bad , but only because it's low res when playing it fullscrteen , anything else is ok.
