Pirates, terrorists and monsters...

I've been hearing about pirates, terrorists even monsters (?!?) appearing in the game. I have never seen them and i'm wondering what do they do. Well i'm guessing that they attack you but where do they come from? I'm especially curious about those monsters

I had a game where a UN resolution was to build a prison on one of the planets. Several turns later, there was a message of a prisonbreak at New Iconia and that the prisoners had commendered some ships and there was suddenly a big hole in the Iconian influence...it was really cool (though I never saw the ships myself)

The pirates were a holy terror in the beta, they appeared in over half the games I played. I have not seen them in the new game and they may have been toned down.

Monsters come from an anomaly and used to pop up fairly frequently. I haven't seen one in months and they may be out of the game but I doubt it. Random events are random and some I see talked about I have never seen. I have seen many posts about getting precursor rangers in successive games but I have never had that event even going back to GC1.

I had the prison break on one of my worlds. The pirates had two ships ( a heavy fighter and a frigate). The odd part was that they had better tech than my military! They chased one of my fighter groups until I brushed them off on another empire's fleet.

I've picked up Rangers and Corvettes. I also get pirates frequently, but they haven't been significantly dangerous for anything more heavily armed than a fighter.

Late game pirates are pretty dangerous. They actually have pretty good tech when I have pretty good tech.

And terrorists are certain minor races. They'll do stuff like poison planets, changing its PQ.

There are no monsters in this game.

I also almost had what I think was the Dreadlord appearing event occur, but I ended the game before it happened.

Grrr. I hate late game pirates. They had 4 dreadnaughts, and 3 battleships with heavy shielding and subspace blasters. nothing like a battlegroup with 450attack and 250 defence. I had nothing (built) that could stop them.

I've had pirates turn up in about a third of my games. I haven't had the terrorist event happen in GC2 since beta, though I'm sure it's still there, it's just rare. Monsters are gone.

It would be interesting to have have a choice as to if monsters / dread lords ravage the galaxy, such as with Master of Orion 2 were you could have the anatarans attack your colonies.
