upgrading all ships too expensive

Is it just me but does upgrading a ship you've created seem to cost too much money.

I usually add new lazers, defence etc.. to an existing ship type ive created but when given the option to upgrade all the ships its always in the 1000's of credits and i just cancel upgrading and build new ships instead it seem to be cheaper.

surely just adding a gun to an existing ship should be cheaper than making a whole new ship from scratch.

If you could fit the gun on in the first place you should have. Since you need to miniturize all parts of your ship to fit the new gun in...

And IMHO i dont bealive that upgrading a submarine or any type of a ship in reality is very cheap, hell, after a few upgrades you could have probably bought a new ship.

Upgrading is important for preserving high-level crews. If you've got level 14 medium-hulls with 30-some odd hitpoints, it'd be foolish not to upgrade unless you want to cut maintenance expenditures.

True i forgot about the fact the ships may have gained experience already therfore have more hitpoints and are worth upgrading.

As you seem to get hardly any credits for decomissioning old ships i never sell them just use them as planet defence cannon fodder against the enemy once they have 'adapted'.

I still think globaly upgrading is more expensive than building new ships the only thing against is the extra time it takes to create them. So is a trade off i suppose.

You could also look at the amount of money you spend on the Industrial capacity it takes to construct those ships. Each turn they're being built on, say, an 80 MP planet, you're paying for those 80 Military Production. It's more math than I'd like to get into, but it may not be cheaper some times.

The game I just finished, I upgraded 2 ship models in the same class that I'd built around 19 of. There is a check box you can use to upgrade all of ships of a particular model. Cost was like 22k total. Money came from selling tech to a rich but much less advanced AI.

My reasoning for the big purchase had been it was much quicker than building new ones, taking only 1 week. The slightly improved weaponry but much more effective defense made them offensively much tougher. It turned the tide in the middle of the game.

I also paid for individual upgrades sometimes. Like for my radar pickets. My military production was real limited for a good portion of the game.

Upgrades make sense in some situations. In other situations, they don't make sense at all.

The 'upgrade all ships' checkbox is above the shipclass listing in the upgrade dialog.
