Galciv finally froze my mouse for good [fixed, never mind]

Hi. I've got trouble with my mouse. When I was playing GalCiv before, my mouse would occasionally freeze - even after I quit the program, the mouse would be stuck in one place. Usually if I rebooted everything would be fine.

Well, now I've got my mouse frozen, I've rebooted multiple times, and it still won't come back. Luckily I am a glad hand with the TAB key or I wouldn't be able to post at all.

Here are my stats:

AMD dual-core Athlon64 X2 3800+ - Have almost the latest drivers for it (I'm running about 1.2.2.0, latest are 1.2.2.2 - don't know the exact version numbers)
2 GB RAM
Logitech MediaPlay mouse - Running the latest version of SetPoint from Logitech (2.47)
Windows XP (32-bit)

I was running GalCiv in fullscreen mode, and I had "hardware mouse" turned on after seeing some other reports of mouse troubles. I installed everything from StarDock, and at the time it froze on me I was running with the patch that was released on Friday.

From reading the forums, it seems like a lot of other people have been having trouble with the specific combo of AMD64 chips + WinXP 32 + Logitech devices. I don't think I've seen anyone post about their mouse freezing over reboots, though.

I'm going to try reinstalling my mouse drivers, but it might be a little difficult because on Logitech's mouse driver page YOU CAN'T DOWNLOAD THE DRIVERS WITHOUT A MOUSE -- it's impossible to navigate to the download link using just the keyboard. $%*!$(**@# Logitech! They've got the best hardware out there, but their drivers and support have always been insanely bad...

Anyways, any advice would be appreciated, and I'll update this if I can get the thing to work again.

If galciv isnt running theres no way it would mess with your mouse. If your mouse curser isnt moving, then windows isnt recognising your mouse. Also, if you can post here, you can download. I know this may sound condescending but have you checked if your house is plugged in right? if its optical, does the light come on? If its USB, have you tried putting it in the PS2 port with the converter? if thats how its run and its usb, have you tried it just in a usb slot?

Check your device manager (control panel > system > hardware > device manager) and see if your mouse shows up there too.

Try unplugging your mouse then turn off your computer plug it back in and power the computer back on.

Hey guys...

Thanks so much for your suggestions. The problem was apparently that I AM A WORTHLESS IDIOT and didn't notice that my mouse had run out of batteries! Sorry to wrongly accuse you guys, Stardock!

In my defense, though, the problem was exacerbated by the fact that my regular PS/2 mouse, which I plugged in as a backup, is apparently dead as a doornail as well. I've also updated my CPU and nVidia drivers, for whatever that's worth.

I am sure this is some kind of bad karma left over from the days when I used to do tech support. How embarrassing... Anyways, thanks again.

Hm. I hate to point out the obvious, but did you ever think of changing the batteries in your mouse? It -is- a cordless mouse, correct?

Hmm, well maybe having your batteries die was merely a coincidence. I had the exact tsame thing happen to me yesterday and I have a logitech G5 , a corded mouse.
Had to reboot to restore proper display of mouse cursor. I DID still have the mouse. When I moved around GC2 UI I saw buttons light up. Thus, with a bit of finesse I was able to save my game and quit. I have played for a couple hours since that and it has not happened. This was before the -D patch released on friday. I only stopped to write this because my symptoms matched the posters almost exactly and because I actually care about this game enough to spend 10 minutes posting. Love the game so far!!
(AMD 2400+, 768ram, 6800gt, XPpro 32, ECS gargage mobo.)

I also have a G5 (great mouse) and haven't had any problems running on the bundled setpoint software.

Actually, just for the record, I did experience this same behavior before this most recent problem with the batteries. It persisted back to the windows desktop, too, I could draw little select boxes but the actual mouse cursor was frozen in place. In my case, a reboot set things right that time.
